Valletta City Gate
The Valletta City Gate is the main entrance to the capital city. It is located in the centre of the land-facing fortifications of the city, and serves as the principal entryway to Valletta for tourists and locals alike. It connects Triton Square to Republic Street.
It stands on the same site on which various city gates have stood throughout the ages, each reflecting the needs of the time.
Works on the city gate, designed by Renzo Piano as part of the regeneration of Valletta, were finalised in 2014. The current gate contrasts with previous designs in that it shows a sense of openness, reflecting the Maltese culture of the 21st century.
The sides of the fortifications support two long lance-like structures, symbolising two knights guarding the entrance to the city.
